Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, means it's time to get the family together in the kitchen for some pancakes.

Shrove Tuesday was traditionally dedicated to using up any rich foods in the house before Lent, such as eggs, milk and sugar. And as Lent coincides nicely with the last few weeks of winter and the beginning of spring, it's a great time to think about getting those little DIY jobs done and refreshing your kitchen in time for the better weather. Maybe you want to modernise your kitchen and create a cool, sophisticated space for dining and entertaining - high gloss doors are a great choice. Or perhaps it's a cosy, slightly rustic look you're after, in which case, cathedral doors would work beautifully. Or maybe you simply fancy a change that strikes the balance between traditional and timeless - the Shaker door is a classic design that never goes out of style.

The great thing about Pancake Day is that it's really easy to celebrate - chances are, you already have all the ingredients you need in your cupboards. Depending on how confident you feel with a frying pan, you can try beating the world record for number of pancake tosses: 140 in one minute. If you'd rather not risk pancakes stuck to the ceiling and batter on the floor, we don't blame you. So we've scouted out the best pancake recipe ideas to make your mouths water and your pans sizzle, and all you need to do is feast.

Lemon and sugar

It's a classic for a reason - the sharpness of the lemon and the slight crunch of sugar make an unbeatable combination. Golden syrup was also a popular choice here in the Kitchen Door Workshop office.

Chocolate in any form

The chocoholic in your life will adore these crepe-style pancakes - cocoa powder in the mixture adds a bit of richness to the pancake itself, while the chocolate spread and berries make a delicious filling. Berries also work beautifully with white chocolate. You'll find bags of frozen berries in your local supermarket - they're slightly cheaper than buying fresh fruit and they'll last until you need them.

Fruit

Strawberries and whipped cream, blueberries and syrup, banana and peanut butter - you could even try adding berries or mashed banana directly to your pancake mixture. We love these oaty pancakes with raspberries and honey, and think this mango and coconut topping sounds different, but delicious.

Why not try something a little different?

Take inspiration from around the globe and give this Finnish pancake dessert a try - you cook it in a roasting tin rather than a frying pan, which means it rises like a sweet Yorkshire pudding. Serve with your topping of choice. Alternatively, make pancakes part of your main course, and fill them with something savoury. Cheese, ham and mushrooms make great savoury pancakes, or why not give your pancakes a decadent upgrade by adding smoked salmon and cream cheese?
